Volksballons
The space is evenly distributed with helium-filled balloons. At first they are weighted down by miniature figures tied to a string. These are toy figures from former East Germany that have been cast in ice, small East German soldiers, cowboys and Indians. As they begin to melt, shedding their weight, the balloons gradually rise into the air, leaving tiny pools of water behind on the floor.
Volksballons (People's Balloons) was developed for the opening of the Volkspalast (People's Palace), a temporary cultural space housed in the Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) in Berlin.
