Building after Catastrophes

Working with children, Eva Meyer-Keller and Hanna Sybille Müller carry out intuitive catastrophe research. Using the simplest of materials, the children model earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, meteorite impacts, avalanches, forest fires, terror attacks, explosions, floods, droughts and hurricanes live on stage. A strong and fascinating discrepancy arises from the innocuousness of the materials at hand such as matches, sugar cubes, flour, blancmange, water, a hair dryer, mixer, tongs and paper and the fundamental awesomeness of (natural) catastrophes. The painstaking, involving activity of craft making is also contrasted with the violence and destructive force of the events being depicted.
The staging of the collective building process and the final unleashing of the catastrophe takes place in front of the 'eye' of a video camera, the close up images from which are transmitted live to monitors in the space. The audience simultaneously witnesses the 'making of' as well as the mediated visualisation of what takes place while it happens as well as the sole responsibility for what they (choose to) see.

Gemeinsam mit Kindern betreiben Eva Meyer-Keller und Hanna Sybille Müller intuitive Katastrophenforschung. Mit einfachsten Mitteln werden Erdbeben, Vulkanausbrüche, Meteoriteneinschläge, Lawinen, Großbrände, Terroranschläge, Explosionen, Überschwemmungen, Dürreperioden und Wirbelstürme modellhaft im Bühnenraum nachgebaut. Dabei stellen die zum Einsatz kommenden Gegenstände und Materialien wie Streichhölzer, Zuckerstücke, Mehl, Pudding, Wasser, Föhn, Mixer, Zange oder Papier in ihrer harmlosen Alltäglichkeit eine starke Diskrepanz zu dem unvorstellbar und fundamental Schrecklichen der (Natur-)Katastrophen her. Auch die gewissenhafte, achtsam-konstruktive Tätigkeit des Bastelns bricht sich mit der Gewalt und Zerstörungskraft der realen Vorbilder. Die Inszenierung des kollektiven Bauprozesses und das letztendliche Auslösen der Katastrophen finden für das ‚Auge‘ einer Videokamera statt, deren Aufzeichnungen im close up live auf Monitoren im Raum übertragen wird. Das performative Making of haben die ZuschauerInnen somit immer gleichzeitig mit den medialen Visualisierungen des Geschehens im Moment der Aufführung vor Augen - wie auch die alleinige Verantwortung dafür, was sie sehen (wollen).
